8.NS.1
Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually or terminates, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually or terminates into a rational number.

Data from Star Trek (The Next Generation)
ra·tion·al 1. agreeable to reason; reasonable; sensible 2. having or exercising reason, sound judgment 3. sane; lucid 4. endowed with the faculty of reason 5.of, pertaining to reasoning powers If you have never seen Star Trek, forgive me. I watched it when I was a kid. A character on the show named Data is an android without emotions or feelings. He only has the ability to reason rationally based on his programming. Data processes everything based on a series of inputs and outputs, events and outcomes. The idea of a magic trick would not compute. There is only cause and effect. Think about how Data's rational behavior would correspond to that of a rational number. How should rational numbers behave? |
Irrational NumbersJim Carrey in "The Mask"
ir·ra·tion·al 1. deprived of reason. 2. without sound judgment. 3. utterly illogical: irrational arguments. Stanley Ipkiss is a shy and unlucky bank clerk working at the local Edge City bank. He is frequently ridiculed by everyone around him, except for his Jack Russell Terrier Milo, and his co-worker and best friend Charlie Schumaker. Stanley finds a wooden mask near the city's harbor. Placing it on his face transforms him into a zoot-suited, green-faced, bizarre, wise-cracking trickster known as the Mask, who is able to cartoonishly alter himself and his surroundings at will. Think about how Stanley's irrational behavior would compare to an irrational number. What about the officers' behavior? What are the characteristics of an irrational number? |
